CBD and Athletes: The Legal Status

CBD and Athletes: The Legal Status

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a compound found in the cannabis plant that has been shown to have many health benefits.

Many athletes are already using CBD oil to help with things like pain relief and recovery, but is CBD legal for athletes?

Here we'll take a look at the legality of CBD oil for athletes and some of the potential benefits it offers.

Difference between CBD and THC?

Unlike THC, the psychoactive compound in marijuana, CBD does not produce any mind-altering effects.

However, it does seem to have a variety of health benefits which is why athletes are particularly interested in CBD since it's a natural remedy that can help with pain relief and recovery from injuries.

The health Line explains in depth the difference between CBD and THC and how they work individually. Take a read about the different types of CBD there are!

The World Anti-Doping Agency: Is CBD legal?

As of 2017 the World Anti-Doping Agency removed the cannabinoid CBD from its list of banned substances and current legislation confirms that athletes will not be banned from professional sports if CBD is detected in blood screen tests.

However, all other cannabinoids such as THC, whether natural or synthetic, are prohibited in-competition.

What type of CBD should I use as an athlete?

As an athlete it is important to get 'CBD isolate' products containing no other cannabinoids which could be exempt from this list and not show up on a drug test.

Isolate products have had all other cannabinoids removed, meaning they are essentially pure CBD, seen as the safest option for athletes competing under WADA guidelines.

It is always a good idea to take a look at the product certificate of analysis prior to purchase as well as third party Lab Results to ensure your products are certified.
